Common Iron Play Mistakes and Simple Fixes
Spot the everyday iron faults that cause thin shots, heavy contact, pulls, and weak fades.

Heavy shots
If the club keeps hitting the ground before the ball, check ball position and pressure. Many golfers hang back trying to help the ball up, which moves the low point behind the ball. Make slow swings feeling your chest and belt buckle finish toward the target.
Thin shots
Thin contact often comes from standing up through impact or being afraid of the turf. Place a tee flat on the ground just ahead of the ball and try to brush it after impact. That gives your swing a forward low-point target.
Pulls and weak fades
Direction problems usually mix face and path. A pull can come from a face closed to the target; a weak fade may come from an open face and glancing strike. Before rebuilding, check alignment with a club on the ground.
Coach’s tip: Fix the start line before you fix the curve. If the ball starts where you expect, you’re much closer to diagnosing the real issue.
Quick recap
Most iron mistakes have a simple first check: ball position, pressure, alignment, and low point. Start there before adding another swing thought.
