Iron play
The Fundamentals of Iron Play
Build the setup and impact habits that help irons strike the ball cleanly and fly predictable distances.

Strike comes first
Good iron play starts with ball-first contact. You don’t need a tour-perfect divot, but you do need the low point of the swing near the ball instead of several inches behind it. That is why setup, balance, and a steady chest through impact matter so much.
A solid 8-iron that flies pin-high is more valuable than a pretty swing that catches the turf first.
Setup checkpoints
Use these basics before changing the motion:
- Ball roughly center for short irons, a touch forward for longer irons.
- Weight balanced, with a slight sense of pressure into the lead foot.
- Hands neutral or just ahead of the ball, not dramatically pressed.
- Clubface aimed before your feet settle.
The feel to chase
Think of brushing the turf after the ball, not scooping it into the air. The loft on the club is already designed to launch the shot. Your job is to deliver the face cleanly and keep speed moving through impact.
Quick recap
Iron fundamentals are not complicated, but they are unforgiving when ignored. Start with aim, ball position, balance, and contact; then build distance and trajectory from there.
