Drills to Improve Iron Play
Practice strike, start line, and distance control with drills that make your irons more dependable.

Drill one: towel behind the ball
Place a small towel a few inches behind the ball. Hit half-swings without touching it. Start with a short iron, then move to a 7-iron once contact improves. The drill teaches the club to bottom out nearer the ball instead of behind it.
Drill two: start-line gate
Set two tees just in front of the ball, wide enough for the ball to pass through. Pick a target and hit ten shots, tracking how many start through the gate. You can make the gate narrower as your control improves.
Drill three: three-yardage ladder
Choose one club and hit three stock-feeling shots: soft, normal, and firm. The goal is not maximum distance; it’s knowing how the same iron behaves when you vary speed and finish.
Putting it in focus
Iron drills are only valuable if they lead to better strikes. FocusGolf captures swings from a Wear OS, Apple Watch, or Garmin watch and lets you review tempo, speed, consistency, transition, and motion data, with video available in the mobile app. When the towel drill or start-line gate produces a compressed shot, you can save more than the memory of a good sound.
Quick recap
A good iron drill gives instant feedback. Train low point, start line, and distance windows, then take the best drill to the course in a simpler form.
