Common Misinterpretations of Putting Stats
The misleading ways golfers read putting stats, and the context that keeps them honest.

One number can lie
Total putts is the most abused stat in amateur golf. A player who misses every green but chips well may look like a putting genius. A player who hits 15 greens may look average because the first putt is often far away.

Pair putting stats with first-putt length and green-in-regulation context. A 36-putt round full of 50-footers is different from a 36-putt round full of missed 5-footers.
Coach’s tip: Before blaming the putter, ask where the first putt started.
Use stats kindly
Numbers should guide your next session. They should not become a voice in your head over every 4-footer.
