The game carries its past
Course care practices have changed enormously in fifty years, but the fundamental challenge for the greenkeeper has not: produce surfaces that are fair, consistent, and safe while managing water, nutrients, wear, and weather. The technology has improved; the underlying problem is the same.
What changed for everyday golfers
Modern greenkeepers work with GPS-guided mowers, soil sensors, computerised irrigation, and agronomic programmes that respond to data rather than tradition alone. Still, a firm approach surface after a dry week, a green that’s aerated and slower than expected, or a bunker that’s just been raked and re-sanded all require the same response: read the condition, adjust the plan, and play to what the course is offering today.
