Two games, two mindsets

Stroke play counts every shot until the card is signed. Match play only asks whether you beat the opponent on this hole. That difference changes strategy fast: in a partner match where a safe par wins the hole, a safe middle-of-the-green shot may be perfect in match play and merely cautious in stroke play.

Format Smart habit
Stroke play Avoid the score-wrecking hole
Match play Know what your opponent has left

Concessions and pressure

In match play, conceded putts are part of the rhythm. In stroke play, finish everything unless the competition rules say otherwise.
