A First-Timer's Checklist for Golf Memberships
Use this checklist before touring, trialing, and joining so your first membership feels considered rather than rushed.

Before the tour
Write down likely rounds per month, preferred playing times, practice needs, family use, guest habits, and maximum annual budget. If you don’t know those answers, every clubhouse can sound convincing.
During the visit
Check course condition, tee options, pace, range quality, short-game space, walking rules, carts, lockers, food minimums, guest policies, programs, cancellation terms, and waitlist details.
During a trial round
Play your normal tees at your normal time of day if possible. Notice whether forced carries fit your game, whether you can recover after a poor tee shot, and whether the greens are fun or just punishing.
Ask current members
- How hard is it to get a tee time?
- What’s weekend pace like?
- Are new members included in games?
- What costs surprised you?
- What do you wish you’d known?
Wait a day before deciding. The right first membership should make you see yourself improving, relaxing, and becoming a regular.
