How to Be a Great Playing Partner

Make the round better with awareness, encouragement, boundaries, and calm energy.

Be easy to play with

Great playing partners do not need to shoot 72. They keep pace, watch shots, laugh at the right moments, and do not make every hole about themselves. If someone hits a good shot, say so. If they hit a bad one, give them room.

Advice needs permission

Unsolicited swing tips can ruin a round. Even if you see the issue, the course is usually not the place for a lesson. Try, “Want a thought, or are you just playing?” If they say no, respect it.

Handle extras carefully

Ask before playing music. Keep volume low enough that another group will not hear it. Put phone calls away from tees and greens. If gambling is involved, make stakes clear before the first tee.

Good partners naturally

  • Help search for balls, but watch time.
  • Stand in safe, quiet places.
  • Celebrate without overdoing it.
  • Notice when someone is nervous or new.
  • Keep frustration from spreading.
