Course maintenance
The History of Course Maintenance
How better turf care changed expectations for speed, consistency, and playability.

Maintenance has changed the game
Modern course maintenance has shaped what golfers expect: smoother greens, more consistent bunkers, sharper mowing lines, and playable turf through difficult weather. Earlier generations often played bumpier, slower, more variable conditions.
Why that matters
Better conditioning can make golf more enjoyable, but it can also raise expectations unrealistically. Nature still wins some weeks. Heat, rain, shade, traffic, and disease pressure all affect the finished product.
Appreciate the tradeoffs
Faster greens may look impressive but require careful water and grass health management. Sometimes the smartest maintenance choice is restraint.
