Breaking 100

How to Structure Breaking 100

Build a scoring plan around fewer penalties, smarter club choices, and a short game that keeps big numbers away.

Start with the math

To break 100, you don’t need many pars. Bogey golf with a few doubles still gets the job done. The real enemy is the 8 or 9 caused by two lost balls, a hero recovery, or three chips that never reach the green.

Your priorities

  1. Keep tee shots in play, even if that means hybrid or 5-wood.
  2. Aim approaches at the fat side of the green.
  3. Get the first chip on the putting surface.
  4. Eliminate three-putts by improving long-putt speed.

Plan the round

Before you play, identify holes where driver brings too much trouble. On a tight par 4, a 170-yard safe tee shot can beat a driver reload. From 150 yards, aiming for the middle of the green is usually smarter than firing at a tucked flag.

Practice match

Spend half your practice time inside 70 yards. If you can pitch onto the green, lag putt close, and tap in, the scorecard changes quickly.
