Ball position
How to Practice Ball Position Under Pressure
Train your setup so tournament nerves, first-tee jitters, and uneven lies don't push the ball into the wrong spot.

Pressure changes your eyes
Under pressure, players often aim differently, widen the stance, or let the ball drift without noticing. A driver on the first tee can creep too far forward. A wedge over water can sneak back because the player wants to “help” it. The swing didn’t fail alone; the setup changed first.
Add consequences in practice
Try this nine-ball game:
- Choose three clubs: wedge, 7-iron, driver.
- Hit one shot with each, rebuilding ball position from scratch.
- Score one point for solid contact and one for a held finish.
- Repeat three times. Beat your previous score.
Simulate the course
Don’t rake ball after ball into the same place. Step back, choose a target, go through your routine, and set the ball position as if it matters. Add uneven lies when possible. On a downhill lie, the ball may need to sit slightly back so you can match the slope and strike it cleanly.
Final thought
A dependable ball position is quiet confidence. It gives your swing a fair chance before the club ever moves.
